***** STARTING THE PROGRAM *****
Before you begin you should always make a backup copy of the
program diskette.
Note. Refer to DOS manual to make backup.
After you have installed HARD DISK MENU with the INSTALL
program you can start the program from anywhere by typing:
MENU followed by the Enter key.
The first time you run HARD DISK MENU you will only have one
menu option. The sample, which is supplied on the original disk
and installed on your hard drive from the INSTALL program. Once
you created your first menu definition file you may delete the
file MENU.MNU, the option will automatically be remove from the
menu list.
Note. While in HARD DISK MENU choose option Alt-D do delete the
MENU.MNU file.
Option Alt-S
The Alt-S key on your keyboard is to activate the screen
saver. If you have a mouse just click once with the left mouse
button on the Alt-S and the screen saver will be activated. If
you walk away from your computer without activating the screen
saver. It will automatically be activated in three minutes from
the last keyboard action.
To return to HARD DISK MENU, just press any key on the
keyboard. Their will be a slight pause and HARD DISK MENU will be
back on screen.
Option Alt-A
The Alt-A key on your keyboard will activate the built-in
calendar. While in the calendar mode use the Left and Right arrow
keys to change the months and use the Up and Down arrow keys to
change the years. Press "End" to return to HARD DISK MENU.
Mouse users just click once with your left mouse button on
Alt-A to activate the calendar.
Option Alt-C
The Alt-C key on your keyboard will activate the built-in
calculator. It is just a simple calculator which allows you to do
additions (+), subtractions (-), divisions (/) and
multiplications (*).
Mouse users just click once with your left mouse button on
Alt-C to activate the calculator.
Option Alt-H
Option Alt-H is like a help key. It will display this
documentation. To browse through the documentation use the Up and
Down arrow keys or PgUp and PgDn keys to move one page at a time.
You can press "Esc" any time to leave the documentation and
return to HARD DISK MENU.
Mouse users just click once with your left mouse button on
Alt-H to activate the documentations.
Option Alt-N
Option Alt-N is so you can define a new menu definition
file. The first thing you will be asked for is a file name. The
file name must be no longer than eight characters with no
extension. The extension ".MNU" will be added to the file. Try to
keep a file name similar to the description line for the menu.
e.g. If you are setting up a menu definition for Lotus 1-2-3 call
the file lotus and the menu choice line Lotus 1-2-3. This is
because the menu choices are sorted by the file name and not the
menu choice name.
After you enter a file name, the first line you must enter
is the menu choice. This is the line that will appear in your
menu choice selection window. Next enter the first command
required to starting the program. Normally this would be the
change directory DOS command. (e.g. "cd\lotus"). Followed by the
next command to start the program. (e.g. "123"). When you are
finished entering the commands necessary to start your program,
just press enter on a blank line and the file will automatically
be saved.
Note. If you are starting your program from a batch file (a file
with the extension ".BAT" you must use the DOS batch command
"CALL" to run the batch file (e.g. CALL 123). This will allow for
your batch file to return to the calling program.
Option Alt-E
This option will run the buit-in editor. The editor is
simular to the DOS edit that comes with MS-DOS. You are limited
to a file size of a maximum of 32K-Bytes. Click on Help while in
the editor to select the editor help file.
Option Alt-D
If you have removed a program from your hard drive use this
option to delete and the menu definition file. You can use this
option to delete any files on your hard drive, but only one file
at a time. The directory window looks the same as the file viewer
option, so use the same keys to move around within the window.
Mouse users, the mouse is disabled while you are in the file
viewing window.
Option Alt-X
Leave HARD DISK MENU and return to DOS prompt. Pressing the
Esc key while in the HARD DISK MENU will have the same effect.
Menu Choices
You could move up and down in your menu choices using the Up
and Down arrow keys or PgUp and PgDn. Press Enter on your choice
to run the program. If you press a letter while in HARD DISK MENU
the selection bar in the menu choice window with move to the
first occurrence of that letter in your menu choices. e.g. If you
had Wordperfect as a menu choice and this was the first choice
starting with the letter "W" the menu choice bar would move to
that choice.
Mouse users use the left mouse button and double click on
the item of your choice.
